SETTINGS

When I stepped out into the bright sunlight from the darkness of the movie house, I had only two things on my mind: Paul Newman and a ride home...

The time is 1960's when mustangs were popular in the U.S. Ponyboy, the main character of The Outsider, was in a gang called "Greasers". Greasers took place in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Ponyboy

Ponyboy is the youngest of the greaser gang. In the novel, Ponyboy has light-brown hair and greenish-gray eyes. He has a good build for his size and is a fast runner. At the beginning of the novel, Ponyboy's hair is long and dark, but in Windrixville, it is cut short and bleached blond.

Darry

He is a Strong, athletic, and intelligent20 years old. Darry has quit school. He works two jobs to hold the family together.

Sodapop

Sodapop, sometimes called “Soda,” is the middle of the three Curtis brothers. He is energetic, disinterested in school, and movie-star handsome. ... He reminds Darry and Ponyboy that they “ought to be able to stick together against everything” since they're all they have left family-wise.

Steve

Steve is a 17 year-old greaser who works with Sodapop at the gas station. Steve knows everything about cars and specializes in stealing hubcaps. He is cocky and intelligent, tall and lean. He wears his thick hair in a complicated arrangement of swirls.

Johnny

He is only 16 years old, but has already been beaten down by the cruelty of life. ... Johnny needs to follow in the footsteps of someone in his life and Dally, his hero, is the one he chooses.

Two-Bit Matthew

Two-Bit Mathews was around six feet tall, stocky in build, and was very proud of his long, rust-colored sideburns. He has grey eyes and was always wearing a wide grin. In The Outsiders novel, Two-Bit's hair is described as 'rust colored.

Dally

The toughest hood in Ponyboy's group of greasers. Dallas, known as “Dally,” is a hardened teen who used to run with gangs in New York. He has an elfin face and icy blue eyes and, unlike his friends, does not put grease in his white-blond hair.

Bob

Bob is the dark-haired Soc who beats up Johnny before the novel begins. Bob has a set of three heavy rings, which he wears when he fights greasers. Bob's indulgent parents have never disciplined him.

Randy

Marcia's boyfriend and Bob's best friend. Randy is a handsome Soc who eventually sees the futility of fighting. Along with Cherry, Randy humanizes the Socs by showing that some of them have redeeming qualities. Randy helps Ponyboy realize that Socs are as susceptible to pain as anyone else.

THEME

The Outsider is all about the relationship between members and members in not only Greasers, but also between the  Socs.

The theme: You should do something good for other members in gang. After Ponyboy and Johnny ran away to Windrixville, they co-operate to survive. After they met Dally and come back to the church, it was burning. Ponyboy and Johnny felt responsible for it, so they jumped into the church and rescued the children in the church.

From the action, Ponyboy, Johnny, and Dally got injuries. Ponyboy and Dally were alright, but the gang's pet Johnny was in critical condition.

The whole gang was worrying about Johnny. However, the rumble between Greasers and Socs was on the line. Dally said "We have to win this one. For Johnny." From this, we can see that not only Dally, but the whole gang was trying to win for Johnny.
